Five Tips for Making Healthier Choices While Eating Out

Hello, Thriven community! Coach Cali here, and today I’d like to share some tips on mindful eating. How you eat your food is almost as important as what you eat. Mindful eating can significantly improve digestion and nutrient absorption, helping your body make the most of every bite. Here are some practical tips to help you eat mindfully and enjoy your meals:

1. Prepare to Eat

With our busy lives, we often eat on the go, but it’s important to get into the right state for digestion. Before starting your meal, sit down and take 5-10 deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This practice calms your nervous system, increasing blood flow to your digestive system.

2. Smell Your Food

Before digging in, take a moment to savor the aroma. Smelling your food kickstarts digestion by stimulating saliva production and preparing your body to absorb nutrients.

3. Practice Gratitude

Cultivate gratitude for the food and the people you’re sharing it with. Whether it’s a simple blessing or a moment of appreciation, this practice helps create a positive, relaxed atmosphere for eating.

4. Chew Thoroughly

Did you know that each bite should be chewed 20 times? Chewing breaks down food effectively, allowing your digestive system to absorb more nutrients. If you currently chew fewer times, try gradually increasing the count.

5. Put Down Your Fork

After each bite, put your fork down. This practice slows down your eating pace, making digestion easier.

6. Stay Present

Be in the present moment, enjoying the people around you. If you’re eating alone, avoid distractions like TV or your phone. Pay attention to the flavors, textures, and other aspects of your meal.

7. Stop Before You Feel Full

Eating slowly and putting down your fork between bites gives your body time to recognize fullness. Stop eating before you’re completely full to prevent overburdening your digestive system.

These mindful eating tips can transform your relationship with food and improve your digestion. Slow down, savor each bite, and enjoy the benefits of mindful eating. Happy digesting!
